Arkhangelsk is located in the north of Russia off the coast of the Northern Dvina, near the eastern shore of the White Sea. It is one of the oldest cities in the north of the European part of Russia. Built by the decree of Ivan the Terrible, it became the largest commercial port in the region and remained so until the advent of St. Petersburg.
