Novosibirsk is the administrative center of the Novosibirsk Region and the main city of Western Siberia, in the south of Central Russia. It is located along the Ob River, where the Trans-Siberian Railway crosses it. It is one of the largest cities in Russia, a major industrial and business center of Siberia.

The history of Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk arose after the village of Krivoshchekovo on the left bank was chosen in 1893 as a crossing over the Ob River for the Trans-Siberian Railway. The settlement was known variously as Gusevka or Alexandrovsky, in 1895 it was renamed Novonikolaevsk in honor of the accession to the throne of Tsar Nicholas II. The bridge was completed in 1897, and in 1903 it was granted the status of a city.

The further development of the city was based mainly on its proximity to the coal field in the east and the creation of important railway tracks. In 1925, the city was renamed Novosibirsk. The city's industry was particularly stimulated during World War II, when many factories were evacuated from European Russia to the area. Now it is the largest city in Siberia.

Economy of Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk is a large manufacturing center. Despite the wide range of industries, mechanical engineering, non-ferrous metallurgy and the food industry prevail here. The old, pre-revolutionary metallurgy was transformed into the modern Kuzminsky Metallurgical Plant, which monopolized the production of special types of alloy steel and small diameter pipes in Russia.

The city also has a large tin factory and a highly specialized gold processing plant. Machine-building plants produce heavy machinery, military aircraft, hydraulic presses, electrothermal equipment, mining and processing equipment, and agricultural machinery.

Precision and lighting factories produce machine tools, tools, radios and automatic machines. There are also ship repair and locomotive workshops. The chemical industry has developed rapidly. Consumer goods include furniture, pianos, shoes, textiles, knitwear, and food. Electricity is provided by a dam and a hydroelectric power station above Novosibirsk, as well as several thermal power plants in the city itself.

Transport in Novosibirsk

In addition to mainline rail services on the Trans-Siberian, Kuzbass and Turksib lines, local commuter trains connect the suburbs with the city center. There are two airports here, one smaller, serving local flights, and a large main airport with direct flights to Moscow and other major Russian cities. The Ob River is navigable. Transportation within the city is carried out by bus, tram and trolleybus.

Novosibirsk is the main cultural and educational center of Siberia. There is an opera and ballet theater, a Botanical Garden, an art gallery, museums, as well as a symphony orchestra.

Education in Novosibirsk

There are about two dozen higher educational institutions, including Novosibirsk State University, founded in 1959. Other higher education institutions include railway engineering, electrical engineering, medical, agricultural and pedagogical institutes.

With a large number of educational institutions, the proportion of students enrolled in higher education institutions in the city is one of the highest in Russia. The University and a number of these institutes are located in the satellite town of Akademgorodok to the south of the city.

Since the 1960s, Akademgorodok has become Russia's largest cluster of research institutes of fundamental science and personnel outside Moscow and St. Petersburg. Most of these institutes belong to the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

There are many parks and squares in Novosibirsk. For example, the Central Park of Culture and Recreation with numerous attractions. The main sights of Novosibirsk are primarily church buildings and shrines. One of the most magnificent cathedrals in the city is the Ascension Cathedral.
