What to see in Astrakhan

Spires and bulbous domes adorn the Astrakhan skyline. On the highest hill there are the main attractions of the city - the Cathedral and the castle (Kremlin), built in the 1580s.

There are medical and pedagogical institutes in the city. Astrakhan is known for the great ethnic diversity of its population - it is the homeland of Russians, Kazakhs, Tatars and other peoples.

The economy of Astrakhan

The city is the base of a large fishing fleet. The most important industry is the processing and preservation of fish products, especially caviar obtained from sturgeon fish of the Caspian Sea. Other industries in Astrakhan include ship repair, metalworking, woodworking and chemical production.

The history of Astrakhan

Astrakhan was formerly the capital of the Tatar Khanate, a remnant of the Western Mongol Empire. The city owes its origin to its location on the Volga, the largest river in the region, as well as on caravan and waterways. It has turned into a large shopping center.

Astrakhan was conquered by Timur (Tamerlane) in 1395. Ivan IV (the Terrible) captured the city in 1556, handing over control of the Volga to Russia. The Turks burned down the city in 1569. Astrakhan served as the base for Peter I's campaign against Persia and later the city received special trade privileges.

The Astrakhan Kremlin is a historical symbol of the city, which was built in 1583 in the form of a triangle. It is believed that it was the Kremlin that laid the foundation for the city, and Ivan the Terrible himself was the founder. The Kremlin's 80-meter bell tower is another Astrakhan symbol that can be seen from everywhere.

Of the Orthodox buildings, the Assumption Cathedral, also part of the Kremlin, stands out in particular. This temple is unusual, as the church itself and the Frontal place are connected in a single complex. Of the museums, you need to visit the Museum of local lore, as this is the oldest regional museum with a large-scale collection of exhibits.
