Cheboksary is one of the largest Russian cities, and is also the capital of the Chuvash Republic. In 2001, it was awarded the title of the most well-maintained city, which makes Cheboksary also the architectural capital of Russia.

Religious culture and architecture are of great importance for the city. One Orthodox building stands out in particular, which has been appreciated even by UNESCO - the Vvedensky Cathedral, which is equally valuable both for Russia and for the whole planet.

The central street of the city, Efremov Boulevard, is like a copy of the Moscow Arbat, because it is a favorite place for Cheboksary residents to walk. It is believed that this boulevard is the most beautiful place in the Chuvash capital.

What to see in Cheboksary

The Chuvash National Museum was founded in 1921 and is the largest museum in the Republic of Chuvashia. It tells in detail about the history and culture of the Chuvash people and the Republic of Chuvashia. The museum has sections dedicated to archaeology, ethnography, geology and nature, as well as exhibitions of ancient books, coins and traditional Chuvash clothing, embroidery and jewelry.

The Chuvash State Art Museum was founded in 1939 as the Chuvash State Art Gallery after separation from the city regional museum. The museum presents more than 20,000 samples of works of art, including Russian, Soviet and foreign works.

There is also a large collection of Chuvash national art, especially samples of Chuvash decorative and applied art. The building on Kalinina Street, which runs south of Red Square, is the main building of the museum.

The Center for Contemporary Art was originally just an exhibition center of the Union of Artists of Chuvashia. Its halls feature both permanent and temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, including works by young art students. In addition, the center includes a museum-gallery of the Chuvash artist Ellie Mikhailovich Yuryev.

Monument to Konstantin Ivanov. Konstantin Ivanov is one of the most famous Chuvash poets and writers. His statue was unveiled in 1995 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of his death. It stands next to the majestic building of the Chuvash Drama Theater.

Monument to Ostap Bender and Kisa Vorobyaninov. On Merchant Efremov Boulevard, which is located between Karl Marx Street and Red Square, there is a monument to the characters of Ostap Bender and Kisa Vorobyaninov from the popular book "12 Chairs" by Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov.

In the eastern part of Red Square there is the Resurrection Church, which is believed to date back to 1758. The main part of the church consists of a cubic structure with a golden dome at the top. A bell tower is attached to it through an enclosed lobby.

Victory Park in Cheboksary is located on a hilltop on the banks of the Volga River. The dominant feature of the park is the Monument of Military Glory, which is visible from most of the city. It was opened in 1980 and depicts a mother and a young soldier. The monument also includes an eternal flame.

Monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky. There is still a monument to the founder of the Cheka in Cheboksary. Across the street there is another simple monument dedicated to police officers who died in the line of duty.

Monument to Ivan Yakovlev on Lenin Avenue. Ivan Yakovlev was a Chuvash teacher and writer who founded the Simbirsk Chuvash School with the assistance of Lenin's father Ilya Ulyanov. Yakovlev was also responsible for creating the alphabet for the Chuvash language and for translating many classical works by Russian authors into the Chuvash language. This monument was unveiled at the building of the Ivan Yakovlev National Library.

Museum and monument to Vasily Chapaev. Vasily Chapaev, the famous Soviet commander of the Russian Civil War, was born in 1887 in the village of Budaika, which has since become part of the city of Cheboksary.

After his death in 1919, he acquired legendary status and was later immortalized in Soviet propaganda. This museum, detailing his life and exploits, was opened in 1974 in the gardens bearing his name and contains many documents, photographs and objects related to Chapaev.

The main statue of Lenin in Cheboksary is located on Republic Square, so named because the Soviet-style Parliament building of the Republic of Chuvashia is also located here.

There is a statue of Yuri Gagarin at the intersection of Lenin Avenue and Gagarin Street. The statue depicts an astronaut in a space suit. A little further down Lenin Avenue there is a bust of the third cosmonaut of the Soviet Union, Andriyan Nikolaev, who was an ethnic Chuvash.

The Church of the Archangel Michael is a cubic church with two columns, built in the early 18th century. In Soviet times, the church was closed, and later it was used as a book depository. In 1993, the building was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church and reopened for worship.

The department of Russian and Foreign Art of the Chuvash State Art Gallery is located in the manor house of the early 20th century, which once belonged to the merchant Efremov. The museum features works by various Russian masters and some Western artists. There is also a hall with Russian icons, some of which were previously kept in the churches of Chebosar.

At the northern end of the dam between the Volga and Cheboksary Bay there is a beautiful Assumption Church. The two-storey church was built in 1763 and has a blue dome in the form of an octagon on a cube.

The Mikhail Sespel Museum was opened in 2003 in the building where the Chuvash poet worked as a translator in 1921. Mikhail Sespel, also known as Mishshi Sespel, was born in 1899 in Kazakasy, which was renamed Sespel in his honor and is now part of the Republic of Chuvashia. Today, Sespel is considered one of the leading figures of Chuvash-language poetry, and this small museum has two halls that tell about his life and work.

The main attraction of Cheboksary is the 46-meter monument to the Mother Defender, towering over Cheboksary Bay. The monument was opened in 2003 and is dedicated to all mothers. It depicts a mother with open arms in traditional Chuvash national dress.

The Diocesan Cathedral of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built between 1651 and 1657, which makes it the oldest building in Cheboksary and in the entire Republic of Chuvashia. Before the current stone version, there was a wooden church here, which was first erected in 1555 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The large cubic structure has five small domes and a separate bell tower.

The Spaso-Preobrazhensky Convent is located on a hill known as Vladimirskaya Gorka, at the very end of Cheboksary Bay. The main church of the monastery was the Church of Our Lady of Vladimir, and the version that has survived to this day dates back to 1716.

Cheboksary Holy Trinity Monastery was founded on the banks of the Volga River by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible in 1566 to spread Orthodoxy among the Chuvash people. All the preserved buildings of the monastery date back to the 18th century. The main cathedral is the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, built in 1748, but the oldest surviving building is the small church of Our Lady of Tolga, built in 1713.
