Chelyabinsk is an industrial, machine–building and transport center of Russia with a population exceeding 1 million. The city is located on the eastern slope of the Ural Mountains and on the Miass River.

Chelyabinsk was founded as a fortress in 1736 on the site of a Bashkir village, and became a city in 1787. At first it was the local center of the agrarian region, but with the arrival of the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1894-1896, it began to grow.

The growth of the city was stimulated by the evacuation of industry to the east during World War II. Today Chelyabinsk is the main center of the southern half of the Ural industrial region, well served by rail links with other industrial cities.

The economy of Chelyabinsk

One of the most important industrial centers of Russia, Chelyabinsk has large metallurgical and metallurgical plants, a zinc plant, a ferroalloy plant, a chemical industry, as well as a wide range of heavy and medium-sized engineering industries producing steel pipes and dies, bulldozers, scrapers, tractors, industrial machines and machine tools.

The first natural gas from Urengoy, the largest operating Siberian gas field, reached Chelyabinsk in 1979. Chelyabinsk has a university and a large polytechnic institute, as well as medical, pedagogical, agricultural mechanization institutes and many research institutes. There is also an opera, ballet and other theaters, as well as a philharmonic hall.

If you want to see the concentration of ancient buildings of Chelyabinsk and several architectural styles in one place, then you should go for a walk along the so-called Chelyabinsk Arbat, Kirov Street. Citizens also like to walk around the City Park with its alleys, paths and fountains, which serve as decorations of the city. Not far from it is the best place for family holidays – the zoo, some of whose inhabitants are listed in the Red Book.
