The city of Chistopol received its status back in 1781, which was legally approved according to the decree of Catherine II. As a result, by the end of the 19th century, Chistopol became a major center of grain trade. And, if before 1917 it was only the second most important city in the Kazan Republic after Kazan, then in 1920-1930 it became the center of the Chistopol canton.

The first mentions date back to the chronicles from the end of the 17th century, and they say that the village of Chistye Pole was already a secondary settlement. There were many versions about the history of the founding of this village, but still the most common is the one in which it was believed that the first settlers were runaway serfs or dissenters who were eager to create their own settlement beyond anyone's control, but with all their desire, nevertheless, the village subsequently, or to be more precise At the beginning of the 18th century, it was burned down, and the settlers were evicted.

They burned everything to the ground, leaving only an open field, but the purposeful remnants of the peasants who survived this terrible fire, who escaped exile, began to actively rebuild again, and after they were joined by a new wave. The memory of this great conflagration is still alive.

What to see in Chistopol

A memorial complex with an Eternal flame. Along most of the boulevard in the center of Karl Marx Street there is a city memorial complex from the Second World War. The complex begins at the intersection with Leo Tolstoy Street with a statue of two soldiers, which was erected in honor of the “fearless and faithful sons of the Motherland.” Further on, at the intersection with Bebel Street, there is an obelisk and an eternal flame. Behind this there are several pedestals with images of local war heroes.

The museum of the county town of Chistopol was founded back in 1921 by a local historian, who became its first director. For a small provincial museum, it has a fairly rich collection, which is housed in a majestic two-story mansion that once belonged to a merchant. The museum consists of several halls, including a recreated old mansion, a nature department, a section on the history of the production of Vostok watches and a hall on the history of the city.

At the end of the boulevard on Karl Marx Street is the Church of the Kazan Mother of God, which is located next to the Orthodox cemetery. The church was built between 1840 and 1848 in the classical style and was originally dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ. The main structure of the church has one dome, and a bell tower rises above the main entrance.

The main cathedral of Chistopol and the most notable building of the city is the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, which stands on the main road leading to the historical center of the city, near the banks of the Kama River. The cathedral was built in 1838 in the classical style. The central cubic structure is crowned with five domes, and its facades are decorated with columns. A four-tiered bell tower is also attached to the cathedral.

The Boris Pasternak Memorial Museum was opened in 1990 in the house where the famous Russian writer Boris Pasternak lived when he and other writers were evacuated to Chistopol during World War II. On the second floor of the small museum there are three halls: two memorial halls and one literary hall. The memorial rooms depict the rooms as they looked when Pasternak lived there, one of them is the master's room, and the other is Pasternak's own room.

At the intersection of Lenin Street and Narimanov Street there is a new church of Chistopol - the church of the Eleuska Icon of the Mother of God. The church was built between 2011 and 2013 in the Byzantine Revival style of red and yellow brick. Like most churches in this style, it has a large squat central dome surrounded by four smaller corner domes. All domes and other coverings have a metallic blue color.

The Ikhlas Mosque is located on 40 let Pobedy Street, which is a continuation of Vakhitova Street. The mosque is a modern structure consisting of a main sloping building with a light blue dome at the top. The entrance to the mosque is located between two minarets with light blue spires.
