Near Saratov, on the second bank of the Volga, is the city of Engels. Until 1914, the settlement was called Pokrovskaya Sloboda, from 1914 to 1931 - the city of Pokrovsk. The city is located at the place where the Saratovka River flows into the Volgograd reservoir.

The city has developed the production of metal structures, locomotives, machine tools for the furniture industry, instrumentation, production of power tools, gas boilers, pipes, and transport engineering.

Education in Engels

Engels' higher educational institutions include the Engels Institute of Technology (a branch of the Saratov State Technical University named after Yuri Gagarin) and the Volga Region Cooperative Institute (a branch of the Russian University of Cooperation).

What to see in Engels

Although the city is small in size, it will be interesting to spend time in it because of the many monuments and symbolic places. Thus, the oldest building of Engels is the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the 19th century.

To learn more about the city and the periods of its development, visit the Museum of Local Lore, which contains ethnographic and historical information about Engels and the entire region. An art gallery is also open there. As in many other cities, Engels' monuments are mostly military.

These are memorials in honor of brave fighters. There are monuments to veterans, prisoners, liberators and those who died in hospitals. There is also a memorial in the city, recalling the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
