Ishim is a city of regional subordination, the administrative center of the district of the same name in the Tyumen region of the Russian Federation (Ural District). Ishim is located in the forest-steppe zone in the north of Western Siberia, in the southern part of Tyumen on the left bank of the Ishim River (left tributary of the Irtysh River), 319 km southeast of the center of the region – Tyumen.

A major transport hub is the railway station on the Trans–Siberian railway (Tyumen-Omsk section), highways R-402 (E22, E30) "Tyumen-Omsk" and R-402 "Ishim – Petropavlovsk". The city has a bus station and a local ROSTO airfield.

Ishim was founded in 1670 on the site of the Korkinsky Ostrog settlement (a fortress on the border with the Siberian Khanate). In 1782, the settlement was renamed the city of Ishim. It began to develop during the construction (1913) of the North Siberian Railway. In 1917, it was the center of the Ishim district and the center of the West Siberian Peasant Uprising in 1921.

In the 1920s and 30s, industry was formed and expanded during the Great Patriotic War due to evacuated factories, after re-equipment in 1960-70. Ishim is the center of machine–building and light industry in the south of the region.Modern Ishim with a population of 65.2 thousand people.(2012) covers an area of 4610 hectares.

The economy of the city of Ishim is represented by food and light industries, mechanical engineering, and construction enterprises. Attractions: the Museum of Local Lore, the Epiphany Cathedral (1775-1793), St. Nicholas Church (1886-1891), the Holy Intercession Church (1916), in the vicinity - the settlement of the ruler of the Siberian Khanate Khan Kuchum, etc.
