Kaliningrad is a major transport center of Russia due to its many highways, as well as the administrative center of the Kaliningrad Region, a Russian exclave located between Poland and Lithuania, without land communication with Russia.

Kaliningrad is located near the shores of the Baltic Sea on the Pregolya River. Kaliningrad is known in the country as a city of mechanical engineering with such developed industries as fishing and light industry, as well as metallurgy. In 2018, several FIFA World Cup games were held in Kaliningrad.

The history of Kaliningrad

The city was founded in the 13th century by the knights of the Teutonic Order. Much later it became the capital of East Prussia (Germany). The city was known as Konigsberg until 1945, when it was transferred to the Soviet Union under the Potsdam Agreement. Kaliningrad was renamed in honor of Mikhail Kalinin, a Bolshevik revolutionary and Soviet politician. After the war, the city was rebuilt, few traces of the former Konigsberg remained.

In Soviet times, Kaliningrad was closed to foreign visitors. The port of Kaliningrad is an important naval base for the Russian navy. The city of Baltiysk, located near Kaliningrad, is the only Russian port on the Baltic Sea that is considered "ice-free" all year round, and therefore the region plays an important role in servicing the Baltic Fleet.

The climate of Kaliningrad

Kaliningrad has a humid continental climate with cold winters and mild summers. In summer, there are frequent showers and thunderstorms. Large temperature differences occur between July and January. Spring is cold and windy. Summers are warm, sometimes hot and warm, temperatures can reach +30–+35 °C. In winter, it snows and the temperature can drop to -15 °C.

What to see in Kaliningrad

The oldest building, built before 1288, is the Jewish Church. It is worth seeing the remaining city gates, the Don Tower with the amber museum, the statue of Immanuel Kant, the monument to the cosmonaut, the statue of Tsar Peter the Great, Vladimir Vysotsky.

There are many parks and greenery in Kaliningrad. There is a Youth recreation Park in the Leningradsky district, which is popular with all segments of the population. There is a Lower Pond in the center of Kaliningrad, and an Upper Pond in the north of the city. Kaliningrad has a zoo, which was opened in 1896 and is an arboretum.

There are many museums in Kaliningrad, for example, the Museum of the World Ocean, the Kaliningrad Regional Historical and Art Museum, the Kaliningrad Regional Amber Museum, the Kaliningrad State Art Gallery, the Friedland Gate Museum.

Kaliningrad theaters: Kaliningrad Regional Drama Theater, Kaliningrad Regional Musical Theater, Kaliningrad Regional Puppet Theater, Organ Hall of the Kaliningrad Regional Philharmonic, Variety Theater.

Modern Kaliningrad is a cross between typical Russia and Western Europe, as it mixes Russian and German cultures, reflected in the monuments of culture and history, as well as in architecture. Many attractions were destroyed during the Second World War, but the historical heritage of the city is still great.
