Kemerovo is a city and the administrative center of the Kemerovo region, which is the second largest in this region. Only Novokuznetsk is ahead of it in terms of numbers. Kemerovo occupies the territory of Western Siberia on the banks of the Tom River at the foot of the Kuznetsk Alatau Mountains. Despite the fact that most of the townspeople are Russians, representatives of Caucasian and Asian nationalities can be found in Kemerovo.

The history of Kemerovo

The small village of Kemerovo was founded and merged with the village of Shcheglovo in 1918, forming the city of Shcheglovsk. The city began to develop rapidly with the development of the Kuznetsk coal basin, and in 1932 it was renamed Kemerovo again.

Kemerovo economy

Kemerovo today is a large coal mining center with mines in and around the city, one of the most important chemical industrial cities in Russia. Its products include nitrogen fertilizers, plastics, synthetic fiber materials, aniline dyes and paints, caustic soda, ammonia and pharmaceutical products.

The city's machine-building industries produce coal mining equipment and agricultural machinery, and the sawmill and woodworking industries are also developed. There are mining and pedagogical institutes in the city.
