Krasnoyarsk is a locality in the eastern region of Siberia. The city of Krasnoyarsk is located among the Siberian plains, valleys, taiga forests and park areas. Today, this city is a large economic and cultural center of the northern part of Russia, which is located on the banks of the Yenisei River.

The Yenisei River flows through Krasnoyarsk from west to east. The Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric dam is located 32 kilometers upstream, so the water in the river never freezes. There are islands on the river that are used for recreation.

The Mana, Bazaiha and Kacha rivers also flow in the vicinity of Krasnoyarsk. Mountains are located around Krasnoyarsk in the west and south, for example, Nikolaevskaya Sopka, Chernaya Sopka and Karaulnaya Gora are popular.

The history of Krasnoyarsk

Krasnoyarsk was founded on August 19, 1628 as a Russian border fort. Fortifications were built at the confluence of the Kacha and Yenisei rivers. The fort was named Krasny Yar (red river bank). In 1735-1741, the Siberian Route appeared, which connected Krasnoyarsk, Achinsk and Kansk with the rest of Russia. In 1749, the first meteorite was found 233 kilometers south of Krasnoyarsk, its weight was 700 kg.

In 1822, the village of Krasny Yar was granted the status of a city and given the name Krasnoyarsk, which became the center of the Yenisei province. In 1895, the railroad appeared and gold was found. This increased the growth rate of the city. In 1934, the Krasnoyarsk Territory was formed.

The industrial growth of Krasnoyarsk was stimulated by the relocation of dozens of factories from Western Russia and Ukraine during World War II. After the war, other large factories were built: a metallurgical plant, an aluminum plant, a non-ferrous metals plant, etc.

Districts of Krasnoyarsk

Krasnoyarsk is divided into seven urban districts: Kirovsky, Leninsky, Oktyabrsky, Sovetsky, Sverdlovsk, Tsentralny and Zheleznodorozhny.

What to see in Krasnoyarsk

Krasnoyarsk is divided into 2 parts – the left-bank and right-bank city. The first part of the city is distinguished by its historical atmosphere, because the layout of the 19th century has been preserved there. The historical center is called Strelka.

It was there that the first stone structure of the city was built – the Krasny Yar fortress, after which, at the end of the 17th century, it was given the name Krasnoyarsk.

The symbolic places of the city are the Krasnoyarsk Pillars National Park, which is known for its mountain formations and the old chapel, the image of which is emblazoned on a ten–ruble Russian bill.
