The central buildings of Lipetsk are mainly buildings of the Soviet and post–Soviet era. But many tourists still come to Lipetsk, mainly because of recreational recreation, because the first springs were discovered in the city back in the 9th century.

What to see in Lipetsk

Peter the Great Square was previously known as Karl Marx Square, but was renamed after a monument to the founder of Lipetsk was erected here in 1996. The monument to Peter the Great was unveiled as part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy, which was established by Peter the Great.

Komsomolsky Pond is an artificial pond that was created in 1703 to provide water for the needs of the metallurgical plant and was originally known as the Upper Pond. When Lipetsk became a mineral waters resort, the pond was reconstructed, which made it more pleasant. In 2003, the pond was reconstructed again, fountains were installed and a monument to the ship celebrating the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy was unveiled.

The central City Park of Culture and Recreation is often called simply the Lower Park, as it is located at the foot of the Cathedral Mountain and descends to the city beach on the Voronezh River. The park was first truly developed under Emperor Alexander I, when he founded the Lipetsk Mineral Waters resort here, but most of the modern appearance of the park is more recent - the main sanatoriums on the edge of the park date back to the 1970s and 1980s. There is still a source of mineral water in the park.

There is an interesting Soviet-style statue on Revolution Square, which was unveiled in 1968. The monument is dedicated to the Lipetsk participants of the Great October Socialist Revolution, but among local residents it was nicknamed "the man with the towel" because of the image of a revolutionary waving a banner standing on a high column.

Novolipetsk Metallurgical Plant is located south of the center. The plant was founded in 1931, continuing the long tradition of the Lipetsk Metallurgical Plant. It is currently the third largest metallurgical plant in the country and the largest employer in the city.

The Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul was built only in 2002, but since then it has become one of the symbols of the city. An early chapel dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul was completed in 1885; work on it began in 1872 to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Peter the Great.

The Holy Dormition Monastery was founded in the 17th century as a monastery of the Couple, which existed until 1764, when it was dissolved by order of Catherine the Great. Its only church is the simple but beautiful Ancient Assumption Church, which is the oldest stone building in Lipetsk, built in the 17th century.

Aviator Square is located along Gagarin Street, where a monument consisting of a Mig-19 on a pedestal stands. Next to the Mig there are statues of two pilots from the Lipetsk air base - Sergei Sherstobitov and Leonty Krivenkov. These pilots are considered heroes, because instead of ejecting, they took the burning plane away from the settlement.

Memorial house-Museum of Georgy Plekhanov. The Russian Marxist and revolutionary Georgy Plekhanov, who is considered the founder of the social democratic movement in Russia, was born in 1856 in the village of Gudalovka in the territory of the present Lipetsk region. The master's house on Lenin Street. In 1992, the museum and workshop of the Russian artist Viktor Sorokin were opened. The museum is located in an Art Nouveau mansion of the early 19th century. The obelisk to Peter the Great and Petrovsky descent. One of the ways to get to Cathedral Square is through the pedestrian part of the steps of Petrovsky Descent, which are decorated with cascading fountains. Also nearby is an obelisk dedicated to Peter the Great, which was opened in 1839 on the initiative of a merchant.

The Regional Museum of Local Lore of the Lipetsk region was founded in 1909. Previously, the museum was housed in the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ and has been located in its current building since 1991. The museum is one of the largest regional museums and has exhibitions on the history of the region, including interesting expositions about Soviet repression and World War II, as well as about the nature of the region.

The upper Lipetsk Park is located in the higher part of the Voronezh River Valley. It was founded in 1911. There are also several monuments among the oaks, limes and maples of the park. The monument to the representatives of the First Lipetsk Regional Council is a pretty monument depicting a group of four people, which prompted local residents to christen it the Beatles monument.

Monument to Vladimir Lenin. There is a statue of Vladimir Lenin in front of the administration building on Cathedral Square. This is the second statue of Lenin that stands here and was unveiled in 1983. The first statue was erected in 1957, but it was demolished in the 1980s as it began to deteriorate.

The memorial complex on Heroes' Square is dedicated to the fallen in World War II. It was officially opened in 1968 on the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Red Army. Its main feature is the 19-meter obelisk, at the base of which the eternal flame burns.
