Omsk is the Siberian administrative center of the Omsk region, as well as the transport and industrial center of the region. The city is located on the Irtysh River at its confluence with the Omsk region.

The history of Omsk

Omsk, founded in 1716 as a fortress at the eastern end of the Ishim fortified line between Tobol and Irtysh, developed as an agricultural center and became a city in 1804. Its military function as the headquarters of the Siberian Cossacks lasted until the end of the 19th century. In 1918-1919, the anti-Bolshevik government of Admiral A. V. Kolchak was located here.

The construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway in the 1890s and the position of Omsk as a transshipment point on the Irtysh led to rapid commercial growth. Industrial growth received a great boost during World War II, and since then its population has more than tripled.

The economy of Omsk

Pipelines from the Volga-Ural and West Siberian oil fields supply the refining and petrochemical industries producing synthetic rubber and tires. Mechanical engineering, especially the production of agricultural machinery, also dominates a wide range of industries.

Other industries include the manufacture of cotton and wool fabrics, cord, shoes and leather goods, as well as the food industry. Wood processing is underway. The developed areas in the city are printing, light and chemical.

Omsk's cultural and educational institutions include agricultural, engineering, medical, veterinary institutes and other research and higher education institutions.

Unlike other Siberian cities, Omsk boasts a more favorable and mild climate.

There are 130 monuments in Omsk, and the most important attraction is the Omsk Fortress, which is decorated with Tobolsk and Tarsky Gates. Omsk cultural life is also flourishing. Since its foundation, more than one theater has been built in the city. The oldest is the Omsk Academic Drama Theatre, which opened its doors for the first time in 1874. There is also an Actor's Theater in the city and even a Puppet theater for young viewers.
