Plesetsk is an urban—type settlement, the center of the district of the same name in the Arkhangelsk region of the Russian Federation (North-Western District). Plesetsk is located in the north-west of the East European Plain, in the western part of the Arkhangelsk region, 217 km south of the regional center – Arkhangelsk.

The history of Plesetsk
The settlement was formed in 1897 during the construction of the Vologda-Arkhangelsk railway, as the Plesetskaya station, whose population gradually increased due to sedentary seasonal workers engaged in logging. Under Soviet rule, the first sawmill was built and the infrastructure of the village was laid. In 1932, it became the working settlement of Plesetsk and the district center.
5 km northeast of Plesetsk is the town of Mirny, a closed city, which houses the Plesetsk test cosmodrome of the Military Space Forces.
