Rostov-on-Don is a city in Russia, which is called the southern capital of Russia with a population of over 1 million. It is a cultural, scientific, educational and industrial center. In 2008, he was awarded the title of military glory. Rostov-on-Don is a large port located mainly on the northern bank of the Don River. The city is located near the mouth of the river, where the Don flows into the Taganrog Bay of the Sea of Azov.

The history of Rostov-on-Don

At the end of the 15th century, this region became home to Cossacks who settled along the Don. The Don Cossacks played an important role in the historical and cultural development of Ukraine and Russia. The most famous book about the life and fate of the Don Cossacks is the novel "The Quiet Don" by the Russian writer Mikhail Sholokhov. This story earned him the 1965 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Rostov-on-Don developed next to the fortress built by the Turks in the 15th century (Azov). Rostov replaced Azov as a trade center in the 18th century. In the 19th century, Rostov-on-Don was one of the largest shopping centers in southern Russia. The development of the city was accompanied by industrial growth. Coal and iron ore mining in the region contributed to the establishment of an iron foundry in the middle of the 19th century.

What to see in Rostov-on-Don

Of the many monuments of the city, the most remarkable is the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which amazes with the beauty of its golden domes. Separately, it is worth mentioning the museums of the city, among which the Museum of Fine Arts stands out the most, with a collection of 6,000 relics.

The Botanical Garden is the main natural monument belonging to Rostov University. It is one of the largest Russian botanical gardens, where 6 thousand species of trees and plants grow. The city's zoo is also popular – a popular vacation spot for the whole family.
