Ryazan is a large city with a population of half a million, which is the regional center of the Ryazan region. It was founded in the 11th century, which makes Ryazan one of the oldest settlements.

The historical heritage of Ryazan is represented by 3 thousand monuments. These are churches, cathedrals, temples, civil and Soviet buildings, merchants' estates, etc. However, the most important monument is the Ryazan Kremlin, which includes a number of buildings. The central one is the Assumption Cathedral.

Legends have long been made about the temples of Ryazan, telling about the miracles that happen within their walls. Therefore, almost every temple in the city is a shrine, a place of pilgrimage. The city was also glorified by crafts. These are Kadoma embroidery, Skopin ceramics and Mikhailovsky lace.

What to see in Ryazan

Cathedral Square. In the memorial park around the Cathedral Square there is a small chapel, built in 1995 to commemorate the 900th anniversary of Ryazan. The chapel has the shape of a small tower with a dome at the top.

The Annunciation Church on Zatinnaya Street dates back to 1673 and in shape is a "ship" church with a five-domed structure attached through a closed vestibule to the bell tower.

The Kazan Convent on Furmanova Street was first founded in the middle of the 15th century near the Ryazan Kremlin, however, after a regulated city plan was adopted at the end of the 18th century, the monastery was moved to its current location, which was once occupied by the estate of a local merchant.

Monument to Prince Oleg of Ryazan. Prince Oleg Ivanovich of Ryazan was the most famous Grand Duke of Ryazan, who actively participated in Russian politics in the second half of the 14th century, first joining the Golden Horde against the increasingly powerful Moscow Principality, and then making peace with Moscow. This monument to him belongs to the famous sculptor Zurab Tsereteli and was opened in 2007. It depicts Oleg riding a horse, dressed in armor, with a sword in his hand.

Ryazan Kremlin. It is believed that fortifications have existed on the site of the Ryazan Kremlin since the end of the 11th century. After the plundering of the original Ryazan during the Mongol-Tatar invasion, the Grand Dukes of Ryazan moved their residence here. In the 13th century, an earthen mound with a length of 290 meters was created, on top of which wooden walls and towers were built. Finally, a deep moat was dug around the entire complex and filled with water.

Monument to Sergei Yesenin on Petrova Street. A monument to Sergei Yesenin is located right next to the Transfiguration Church on the Ravine. Yesenin was born in 1895 in the nearby village of Konstantinovo and grew up there on his parents' farm. This monument was opened in 1975 to mark the 80th anniversary of the poet's birth.

The Transfiguration Church on the Ravine. One of the most beautiful churches in Ryazan is the Transfiguration Church. It was built in 1695, and its most beautiful features are the peach color and five decorated domes: one central golden dome and four surrounding silver domes.

The art gallery "Viktor Ivanov and the Ryazan lands" on Pervomaisky Prospekt. This art gallery is a department of the Ivan Zhalostin Art Museum dedicated exclusively to the work of local artist Viktor Ivanov. Viktor Ivanov was awarded the title of People's Artist of Russia, and his works often feature scenes from the Ryazan region.

Monument to Ivan Pavlov in front of house 26 on Lenin Street. This monument to Ivan Pavlov, one of the most famous sons of Ryazan, was unveiled in 1949 and depicts the great academician at the end of his life, elegantly dressed and holding a cane. Its creator, the famous sculptor Matvey Manizer, was awarded the Stalin Prize for this work. The statue stands on a small square in front of the Ryazan Regional Philharmonic Hall.

Ivan Pavlov Museum-Reserve. The great physiologist Ivan Pavlov was born in 1849 in Ryazan, and his beloved estate, where he lived until 1870, has been preserved as a museum-estate dedicated to him and his work. The estate museum consists of two wings. The first is the real house where Ivan Pavlov was born and grew up.

Ivan Zhalostin Art Museum on Svobody Street. The Ryazan State Regional Art Museum named after Ivan Zhalostin was founded in 1913 and is located in a building in the classical style of the late 18th century. Ivan Zhalostin, after whom the museum is named, was a famous 19th-century engraver born in Ryazan province, and his works are included in the museum's exposition among many other Russian and Western artists. The exhibition also features many pieces of folk art and some ancient icons.

The Church of St. Nicholas of Yamsky on Tsiolkovsky Street was built in 1788. In shape, it is a "ship" church with a main structure topped with five domes and an attached bell tower.

Holy Trinity Monastery on Ogorodnaya Street at the exit from the Moscow highway. It is not known for certain when the Holy Trinity Monastery was founded, and there are two theories about this. Firstly, it was founded in 1208 during the reign of Roman Glebovich in Ryazan, and secondly, it was founded in 1386, when St. Sergius of Radonezh visited Pereyaslavl-Ryazan to make peace between Dmitry Donskoy and Oleg Ryazansky. In any case, its main cathedral, the Trinity Cathedral, dates back to 1695 and is the oldest building of the monastery.

Victory Monument. The intersection of Skolny Lane and Pervomaisky Prospekt forms Victory Square. There is a Victory Monument dedicated to the Victory of the Soviet Union in World War II. The monument is an eternal flame in the shape of a star, surrounded by a wreath in front of a statue of victorious troops holding a banner in the air. Next to this stands a tall column with the Order of the Patriotic War.

Lenin Square. The area where Pervomaisky Prospekt branches off into Sobornaya Street and Gorky Street is known as Lenin Square. There is a monument to Vladimir Lenin here. This statue was unveiled in 1937 and depicts Lenin in a standard pose with his arm outstretched and wearing a long coat. Pochtovaya Street just behind Lenin is a pleasant pedestrian street.

Monument to Yevpaty Kolovrat at the intersection of Pochtovaya and Lenin streets. Yevpaty Kolovrat was a boyar and knight of the 13th century, famous for his heroism during the Mongol-Tatar invasion of Russia. In fact, he is glorified to such an extent that he now appears in Russian folk tales. According to legend, Kolovrat responded to Ryazan's calls for help and hurried from Chernigov to help defend the city from the Mongols. Kolovrat was late, so instead he gathered the survivors and pursued the Mongols and eventually even defeated the Mongol rear.

Transport in Ryazan

There are two railway stations in Ryazan. When the train from Moscow approaches Ryazan, the railway line splits into two: the eastern branch (Samara branch) and the southern branch (Voronezh branch).

Ryazan-1 Railway Station is the main station of the city. The station is located west of the city center, about 2.5 km from the Ryazan Kremlin, and mainly serves trains traveling from central Russia to the east of the country, as well as to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. Express trains from Moscow arrive at this railway station.

To get to the city center from Ryazan-1 railway station and the main street of the city - Pervomaisky Prospekt - walk along the street that starts right in front of the railway station. This street opens onto Pervomaisky Prospekt, cross the road and take trolleybus No. 1 or minibus No. 41. Station address: 26A Vokzalnaya Street.

Ryazan-2 Railway Station is located just 800 meters from Ryazan-1 Railway Station and serves trains running from north to south in Central Russia. To get to this station from Ryazan-1, just walk along Vokzalnaya Street (to the right, if you are standing with your back to Ryazan-1 railway station. To get to the city center from Ryazan-2, use trolleybus No. 5. Station address: Dimitrov Square, 26A.

Popular destinations: Adler, Kislovodsk, Arkhangelsk, Astrakhan, Rostov-on-Don, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Novorossiysk, Voronezh, Murmansk, Penza, Vladikavkaz. Commuter trains run in the direction of Kolomna, Moscow and Ryazhsk.

There are also two bus stations in Ryazan. The central bus station is located quite far from the city center, so it is better to get there by public transport. Take buses No. 18, 21, 24, 54 or 69; trolleybuses No. 1, 8, 10; or minibus № 41, 53, 55, 66, 68, 75 or 88 - all pass along the central Pervomaisky Avenue). Ryazan is located quite close to Moscow and has good transport links with other cities in central, northern and southern Russia. Many long-distance trains stop in Ryazan.

Buses from Moscow depart from the Vykhino metro station almost every hour, but arrive at different bus stations in Ryazan - some at the central bus station, others at the Prioksky bus station. The bus number is 960.
