Sayanogorsk is a city of republican subordination on the territory of the Baysky district in the Republic of Khakassia of the Russian Federation (Siberian Federal District). Sayanogorsk is located at the southern tip of the Minusinsk basin, in the foothill, northern part of Western Sayan, in the eastern part of Khakassia, on the left bank of the Yenisei River, 97 km south of the republican center – Abakan.
Transport links: by highways – highway R-411 Sayanogorsk—Abakan and local roads in the directions of Bey, Cheryomushki, Kirovo, there is a bus station, there is an intra-city railway transport. The nearest railway station is Kamyshta, 45 km away on the Abakan–Abaza line. The airport is located on the northeastern outskirts (it is not in operation, the Vityaz aviation club is operating).
The city was founded in 1975 on the site of the settlement designated during the construction of the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP. Currently, Sayanogorsk, with a population of 62.3 thousand inhabitants (2013), is the center of an urban district, which includes the urban-type settlements of Maina (5.1 thousand people) and Cheryomushki (8.3 thousand people), the villages of Maly and Bolshoy Karak, the village of Bogoslovka. Upstream of the Yenisei are the Mainskaya HPP (13 km south, Maina village) and the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP (34 km south, Cheryomushki village).
Economic potential: Mainskaya and Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP, aluminum plant, house-building and stone-processing plants, enterprises of light and food industry.
Sights of Sayanogorsk: The Museum of Local Lore, the Holy Trinity Church, in the vicinity - Sayano–Shushenskoye reservoir, the Gladenkaya ski complex, the Silver Bay trout farm.
