Sergiev Posad is a city near Moscow with a population of 100 thousand people. It is called the pearl of the European part of Russia, because it is part of the cities of the Golden Ring. Due to its proximity to Moscow, the tour of Russia begins with it.

Most tourists come to Sergiev Posad for its main attraction – the largest monastery in Russia, which is called the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra. This is a complex built in the 14th century, and the oldest building of the complex is the Trinity Cathedral.

Other architectural monuments of the Posad are the Assumption Cathedral, Chernihiv Temple, Refectory Chambers, etc. Natural monuments can also be seen near the city. For example, the most wonderful of them is the Gremyachy waterfall, whose height is 25 meters. It is made famous by both the beauty and the healing properties of water.

What to see in Sergiev Posad

The Trinity-Sergius Lavra, which is located on Krasnogorskaya Square. Buses run from the train station to Lavra, but you can also walk there.

Sergiev Posad State Historical and Art Museum-Reserve was founded in 1920. Various temporary exhibitions are held here.

In 2010, a monument dedicated to the defenders of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra during the siege of the Time of Troubles, in particular to peasants Shilov and Slota from Klementyevskaya Sloboda, was erected next to the Stable Yard. Shilov and Slota are credited with disrupting the Polish plan to build a tunnel under the Pyatnitskaya Lavra Tower.

On Red Army Avenue and directly in front of the lavra there is a church ensemble - the church of St. Mary of the 16th century and the church of St. Paraskeva Friday of the 17th century.

On the way to the lavra from the station, between the observation deck and the lavra, at the foot of the hill, there is a quaint chapel-well of St. Sergius of the 17th century, which stands above a natural spring, which, according to legend, was laid by St. Sergius himself.

The stable yards of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, are currently used to store various exhibits of the Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve. Russian Russian Doll Exhibition, which presents one of the largest collections of Russian dolls in the world and tells in detail about the history of dolls, including the life of one of their creators, Sergei Malyutin, who worked in Sergiev Posad.

The Art and Educational Toy Museum of Sergiev Posad is perhaps the most famous landmark of the city, unrelated to the Lavra. Sergiev Posad has a long history of making toys. Sergey Malyutin, the artist who worked on the first set of Russian dolls, worked in the city, and the nearby village of Bogorodskoye is famous for the wooden toys produced there. Russian Russian toys, including homemade wooden and clay figurines, toy soldiers, and Russian dolls are on display in this museum.

The war memorial dedicated to the residents of Sergiev Posad who died in World War II is located on the main street of the city - Red Army Avenue. It was erected in 1950 on the mass grave of soldiers of the Red Army and is made of dark red granite. In 1977, an eternal flame was added to the complex.

Outside the monastery there is a statue of its founder, St. Sergius of Radonezh. St. Sergius was born as Bartholomew near Rostov the Great in about 1314. After the holy visitation, Bartholomew became a monk and took the name Sergius. In 1337, Sergius became a hermit in the dense forest where Sergiev Posad now stands. Over time, he founded a monastery, which turned into a very influential religious center in Russia.
