Shakhty is a city in the Rostov region, which is second only to the regional center in terms of size in the region. This is a border town near Ukraine. The city was founded in the early 19th century, 30 km away. from Rostov. Previously, there were three farms on its territory. During the Soviet years, it became known as the center of the coal industry – one of the most significant in Donbass. But today it is known not only for industry, but also for culture.
Due to the fact that Shakhty is a young city, there are practically no monuments of antiquity, but there are many examples of civil architecture that were erected at the beginning of the last century. Of the cultural institutions, the most significant are the Shakhty Workers' Theater, the Philharmonic Hall, the Museum of Local Lore and the Museum of the coal industry.
