Sheregesh is an urban—type settlement in the Tashtagolsky district of the Kemerovo Region of the Russian Federation (Siberian District). Sheregesh is located in the northwestern zone of the Altai mountain system (Gornaya Shoriya massif), in the southern part of the Kemerovo region, on the left bank of the Bolshoy Obras River (left tributary of the Mrassu River, bas. Ob), 387 km south-east of the regional center – Kemerovo.

Transport links: by the Sheregesh—Chugunash—Temirtau and Sheregesh—Tashtagol highways. The nearest railway station and airport are located 19 km south-west in Tashtagol.

The history of Sheregesh

The settlement was founded near an iron ore deposit discovered by the Sheregeshev brothers in 1912. Since 1935, a working settlement began to form near the mine, where open-pit mining of iron ore was carried out until 1961. Currently, underground mining is carried out at the mine – by the mine method (ore reserves are estimated at 247 million tons).

Modern Sheregesh, with an area of 51.7 square kilometers and a population of 10.2 thousand people (2012), is the center of an urban settlement and a small mining village at the foot of Mount Mustag (935 meters above sea level), with the city-forming industrial enterprise Sheregeshsky Mine, which supplies iron ore to the metallurgical plants of Novokuznetsk.

Sights of Sheregesh

The Church of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, the Ski resort "Sheregesh" with a well-developed infrastructure (3 km south—east) is one of the best in Siberia, the Cross of Worship on Kurgan Mountain, Camel rocks on Kurgan Mountain, an Inverted house, Yete or bigfoot, Azass cave.
