Surgut is the largest city in the Khanty-Mansiysk Okrug. In the Ob region, it is considered a large port and a transport hub of international importance. The economy is especially well developed in the city, because Surgut is the unofficial oil–producing capital of the federation.

It is the industry that makes the city famous, as well as such international-level enterprises as Gazprom Surgut and Surgutneftegaz. It is one of the richest cities in Russia.
