In the Tambov region, being its regional center, there is the city of Tambov with 280 thousand people. It was about this city that one of the most famous hits of the 90s "The boy wants to go to Tambov" was written. Like any other ancient city, it began to be built up for defensive purposes. But since the enemy has never attacked the city in the entire history, the historical heritage of Tambov has almost remained untouched.

It is not only history that attracts tourists to Tambov, but also nature. Tambov has long been considered an imperial granary, and still boasts the picturesque surroundings. The most charming place in the city is the embankment. It is a cozy pedestrian street with small houses, many monuments, flower beds and street lights of unusual shape. It leads to the main square of Tambov – Sobornaya.

What to see in Tambov

Art Gallery of the Tambov region on Sovetskaya Street. The Tambov Art Gallery is located next to the City Park of Culture and Recreation. Temporary exhibitions are held on the upper floor of the gallery, while on the ground floor there is a permanent exhibition, including departments dedicated to Russian and European art.

The Roman Catholic Church of Tambov on Kronshtadskaya Street is dedicated to the feast of the Holy Cross and was built in the Gothic style between 1898 and 1903 as a place of worship for the Catholic community of Tambov, which at that time numbered about 700 people.

Promenade. Undoubtedly, the most beautiful part of Tambov is the embankment of the Tsna River. The embankment was turned into a beautiful park, which became even more beautiful thanks to funny flower arrangements, fountains in the river and various monuments, including Saints Peter and Fevronia, the Russian patron saints of family and marriage.

The Georgy Chicherin House Museum on Sovetskaya Street. Georgy Chicherin was born in 1872 in Tambov province and became the first Soviet People's Commissar of Foreign Affairs. Chicherin was Trotsky's deputy during the Brest-Litovsk negotiations and made a significant contribution to gaining foreign recognition for the Soviet Union. This museum is located in a 19th-century wooden town manor house belonging to the Chicherin family.

The Church of the Intercession on Kronshtadtskaya Square. There is a beautiful Intercession Church on the hill next to the embankment. The church dates back to 1763 and was built in the shape of a hexagon on a cube with a small bell tower attached through an enclosed vestibule. From 1943 to 1988, the Church of the Intercession was the only functioning church in Tambov.

The Regional Museum of Local Lore of the Tambov region on Derzhavinskaya Street was founded in 1879 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Tambov Governorate. Now the museum is located in the former House of Political Enlightenment, a classical-style building built in the 1950s. The museum consists of three floors and tells in detail about the history, nature and geology of the Tambov lands.

Monument to a Russian peasant. Among the gardens known as Sochi Park, not far from Kronstadt Square stands a beautiful and unusual monument dedicated to a Russian peasant. The monument was unveiled in 2007 and depicts a peasant standing with a plow representing peasants.

Behind the Kazan Monastery there is a monument to the famous Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. Sergei Rachmaninov is connected with Tambov, as his family came from Tambov province and owned the Ivanovka estate, where Rachmaninov often stayed.

The oldest church in Tambov and one of the most famous sights of the city is the Transfiguration Diocesan Church. The cathedral was built in the Baroque style and is shaped like a cubic structure topped with five domes.

Monument to Vladimir Lenin. The intersection of Mezhdunarodnaya Street and Karl Marx Street is marked by Lenin Square and the city monument to Lenin. The statue of Lenin has been located here since its opening in 1964.

The War Memorial and the Eternal Flame. Right in front of the Transfiguration Cathedral there is a monument dedicated to the people of Tambov who died during World War II. It was created in 1970 and consists of a massive concrete ring with an eternal flame located inside. The inner side of the ring is made with engravings with the faces of soldiers, partisans and ordinary citizens, as well as commemorative inscriptions.

Monument to Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya on Sovetskaya Street. Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya was a young partisan, originally from a village in the Tambov province. During World War II, Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya volunteered to serve in a partisan detachment operating in the Moscow region.

Transport in Tambov

Tambov-1 Railway Station is located almost in the city center at the end of one of the main streets of the city - Mezhdunarodnaya Street. This street is quite short - about 1.5 km. You can walk along it or take buses No. 18C, No. 18KOM or No. 44 or trolleybus No. 5.

There are two bus stations in Tambov - the Northern and the New bus stations. The new bus station is located far from the center at the western entrance to the city. The bus station serves regional and interregional routes. To get from here to the city center or the train station, use buses No. 41 or No. 45 or minibus No. 45. The address of the bus station is 77 Kikvidze Street.

Tambov North Bus Station is located about 2.5 km from the railway station and serves only regional routes. Buses No. 7, No. 14A, No. 14P, No. 60 and No. 61, trolleybus No. 6 and minibuses No. 16 and No. 30 run between the Northern and New bus stations. The address of the Northern Bus station is 46 Michurinskaya Street.
