Tobolsk is a Siberian city, which is the center of wooden architecture. It is located at the confluence of the Irtysh and Tobol rivers. Founded in 1587, it was one of the main centers of early Russian colonization of Siberia, as it was located along an important river route to the east.

Today it is a river port and a station on the Tyumen-Surgut railway. One of Russia's largest petrochemical complexes using liquid natural gas from West Siberian oil fields is located here.
