Ulyanovsk is one of the oldest cities in the Volga region, which is picturesquely spread out on the banks of the Great Russian Volga River and the Sviyaga River. The first mention of Ulyanovsk dates back to the middle of the 17th century, when it was founded as a fortress called Simbirsk.

Lenin's place of birth

Ulyanovsk is a famous tourist stop as the birthplace and childhood home of Lenin (Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov). After Lenin's death, the city was renamed Ulyanovsk in 1924. The city is an important river port, its most developed industries are mechanical engineering and metalworking.

Famous personalities of Ulyanovsk

Nikolai Karamzin, poets Dmitry Sadovnikov and Dmitry Minaev lived and worked in Ulyanovsk. Denis Davydov and Nilai Ogarev lived in the vicinity of Simbirsk. Ulyanovsk is the birthplace of the contemporary artist Arkady Plastov, who spent many years here. One of the first theaters in Russia and one of the first libraries in the Volga region opened in Simbirsk. Alexander Kerensky and Alexander Protopopov were also born in Simbirsk.

What to see in Ulyanovsk

There is a Lenin Memorial in the central part of Ulyanovsk. It was erected in 1970 in honor of the 100th anniversary of Vladimir Ilyich. The construction of the Memorial stands on 50 supporting columns, which creates the illusion of lightness and airiness.

The exterior of the complex is lined with white marble, the walls are covered with marble mosaics. In the courtyard of the Memorial you will see the Pribylovskaya dacha - a two-story brick building, inside which there is a unique exhibition of gifts from foreign tourists.

The Museum of the History of Civil Aviation is one of the outstanding objects of the city. True, it is not as famous as the places of Goncharov or Lenin, but it is certainly the main aviation museum in Ulyanovsk, which has preserved a number of unique historical exhibits of aircraft that arrived here on their own. This is a real repository of the past with an area of more than 17 hectares.

Alexander Park has become the main recreation area for local residents. In warm weather, there are water slides, pools, artificial beaches, numerous fountains, playgrounds and entertainment venues. In winter, people skate and rollerblade here until late at night. This is a fabulous town with its own infrastructure, picturesque nature, sculptures and wonderful alleys. In the evening, stunning panoramas open, the park is illuminated by numerous electric lanterns.

The monument to Bogdan Khitrovo in the center of Ulyanovsk - Simbirsk was founded in 1648 by boyar Bogdan Khitrovo on a hill on the western bank of the Volga River. The fort was intended to protect the eastern border of the Russian Empire from nomadic tribes and establish a permanent imperial presence in the area.

In 1668, Simbirsk withstood a month-long siege by a 20,000-strong army led by the rebellious Cossack commander Stenka Razin. Yemelyan Pugachev was also imprisoned in Simbirsk before his execution. At that time, there was a wooden kremlin in Simbirsk, which was destroyed by fire in the 18th century. Simbirsk received the status of a city in 1796.

The climate of Ulyanovsk

Ulyanovsk has a humid continental climate. The average temperature is -9.8 °C in February and +20 °C in July. Autumn is mostly warm. Winter is cold, but with light snowfalls and night frosts sometimes below -25 °C. Summer comes in the middle of May. The average rainfall is about 480 mm. There are often moderate droughts.

The economy of Ulyanovsk

The aviation and automotive industries are well developed in Ulyanovsk. UAZ cars and Aviastar planes are produced here. There are many enterprises of the light, defense and food industries in the city. Retail trade in chain stores is well developed.

Transport in Ulyanovsk

Ulyanovsk is located in a place where the routes of the Central European part of Russia intersect. Ulyanovsk has an industrial, transport and business infrastructure, a well-developed network of roads and railways. There is a river port and a passenger terminal, railways, airports, two large bridges that can serve Russian and international cargo flows to Kazakhstan, Central Asia and Southeast Asia, Europe and China.

The main monuments of the city include natural resources – squares, park areas, alleys, which are associated with many historical events. One of them is the Vinnovskaya grove, where the gazebo of the writer Oblomov is located. It is believed that the author borrowed the description of the grove for one of the fragments of the novel "The Cliff". The paleontological reserve in the village of Undory near the city stands out from the archaeological sites. The relics found there date back to the Paleolithic period.
