The village of Urkarakh is spread out on the surfaces of the slopes of the mountains, at an altitude of about 1,500 meters above ocean level. Until the seventies of the twentieth century, it included Nizhny Urkarakh, Verkhny, as well as a new settlement built in the sixties of the twentieth century in the southeastern part of the village. The distance from the village of Urkarakh to Makhachkala is 151 km.
According to legends and various proofs, such as ruins and remains of foundations and walls of residential buildings, defense buildings, cemeteries of the pre-Muslim era, at the beginning of the Middle Ages there were fourteen tukhum settlements near Urkarakh.
Monuments and cemeteries preserved today, as well as burial grounds, indicate that Christianity existed in Urkarakh at some time before the advent of the Islamic religion. Urkarakh was once the residence of the Prince of Kaytag.
There is an interesting interpretation according to which Urkarakh was once divided equally into three parts, and Jews, Armenians, and Russian people lived separately. The Arabs came there three times to convert everyone to Islam.
Over time, they succeeded, and the Armenians were the first to adopt Islam. Later, in Urkarakh, he was approved when a local resident persuaded an Arab military commander to give his own daughter for his son. The Arab agreed, and he himself married a woman from Urkarah.
