Urzhum is a city in Russia, as well as the center of the eponymous district of the Kirov region. The town is located on the left bank of the Urzhumka River, which flows into the Vyatka ten kilometers downstream.
The history of Urzhum
Urzhum was first mentioned in manuscripts dating back to the middle of the sixteenth century, at which time it was a Mari tribal settlement. In order to suppress the uprising of the Mari and Tatar feudal lords, it was decided to build towns in the basins of the Volga, Vyatka, and Kama rivers.
The city Urzhum became such a strong fortress town in 1584. At the end of the eighteenth century, it was made one of the eleven county towns of the Vyatka governorate, and in 1781 the coat of arms of Urzhum was approved.
On the site of the Urzhumsky district, the Buysky iron factory, the Shurminsky copper smelting plant, as well as several wineries worked. In one thousand eight hundred and eighty–three, the first library was opened for general public, and a little later - the school.
In 1934, those living in the city wished to rename the city in honor of a fellow countryman named Kirov, but the name was assigned to Vyatka. The city has a total of about seventy historical and architectural monuments, and the most famous of them is, of course, the ensemble of the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
