The city of Usolye-Sibirskoye is located in the Irkutsk region of the Russian Federation on the left bank of the Angara River. The distance from Usolye-Sibirsky to Irkutsk is 70 km. The Trans-Siberian Railway and the R255 Siberia highway pass through the city.
The history of Usolye-Sibirskoye
The oldest city of the Angara region, Usolye-Sibirskoye, owes its foundation to a salt spring, which was discovered back in 1669 by the Cossack Pentecostal Mikhalev. Salt for these places was a scarce and expensive commodity that was imported from beyond the Ural Mountains.
Thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit of the Mikhalev brothers, who achieved the right to develop and cook salt and built the first cooking pot, a village was founded, the main industry of which was salt extraction and salt making.
And the village was named after the surname of its founders – Mikhalevo. Then it was renamed after the name of the church built on the Spasskaya Sloboda, then after the name of the island – Krasnoe. And finally, due to the rapid growth of the salt industry, the name was born, which has survived to this day - Usolye, that is, located near the salt.
The development of the salt industry also helped the development of the village, which received the status of a city in 1925 and became the center of the Usolsky district. In 1940, the word Siberian was added to the name of Usolye, as there could be confusion with the city of Usolye, located in the Perm region.
Usolye Resort
The city of Usolye-Sibirskoye is proud of its famous resort "Usolye". In the archival documents that have come down to us, information was found that the first therapeutic bath was built back in 1836. It could only be used by representatives of the plant administration and their families.
The saline solution of these baths was curative, producing a good healing effect. And in 1848, a resort appeared at the factory, where both local residents and those coming for treatment could improve their health. This oldest resort in Siberia is still operating today, its water is close in composition and salt concentration to the water of the Dead Sea. It contains almost the entire periodic table.
