Ust-Nera is an urban—type settlement located in the east of Yakutia. It is not only the administrative center, but also the largest settlement in the Oymyakonsky district. It has a population of five people. There is a mining and processing plant in the village, which is also a gold mining plant.

It is located at the place where the Nera River flows into the Indigirka. The Ust-Nera region is spoken of as the north pole of cold. In terms of temperature, it is the second coldest city in the country for winter, the first is Oymyakon. The population here is mainly engaged in gold mining.

The history of the village is as follows: in the thirty–ninth and forty-first years, the expedition of Tsaregradsky worked at the mouth of the Nera in the area of the future settlement. Dozens of the richest deposits of the city have been explored there. In the forty-second year, gold mines were opened, and the first exploration of the Alaskanite tungsten deposit was carried out. In the forty-fourth year, the Indigirskoye GPU of Dalstroy was organized.

In the forty-sixth year, the first building of the future school was built, the construction site was surrounded by barbed wire, as prisoners built it. Until the fifty-eighth year, they built the Magadan highway, houses, and also mined gold. Since the fiftieth year, the settlement has the status of an urban type. Ust-Nera became the center of the Oymyakon region.
