Volgodonsk is one of the newly formed cities in the southern part of Russia. It appeared when the construction of the Volga-Don Canal named after V. Lenin began. Before that, a small village existed on the site of the town in the middle of the 20th century.

Volgodonsk's position is advantageous, as it is located between two major Russian cities - Volgograd and Rostov-on-Don. Stavropol, Elista and Krasnodar are also located next to it. The city began to be built up in the 50s of the last century, and the newest structures appeared in the 70s.

Volgodonsk is a cultural city where you can count three cultural parks, as many cinemas, a branch of the Philharmonic society, as well as the Palace of Culture. There are also archaeological sites in the town. For example, Dobrovolsky Stanets, where you can still find the most ancient relics of the Sarmatian Sea.
