Yelets is a town in the Lipetsk region, located 80 km away. from the regional center of Lipetsk. The city is located at the place where the Yelchik River flows into the Bystraya Sosna River. Its history lasts for several centuries, and dates back to the 14th century.

The city was destroyed several times, and by the hands of Tamerlane himself, as well as by the Mongol-Tatars. However, in the 16th century it was rebuilt, and the defensive fortress became the central element.

What to see in Yelets

The tragic fate of Yelets has left a huge imprint on its sights. On almost every street of the town, you can see buildings belonging to different historical eras. The main street of the World, for example, is full of houses of the 18th century.

Yelets can rightfully be called the spiritual center of the region, since there are as many as 18 churches on its small territory, only 4 of which are inactive and are subject to restoration. One of them is the Znamensky Monastery, which offers a magnificent view.
